TOWNSHIP OF WILMOT MUNICIPAL ELECTION INFORMATION 2010

 

 

Municipal elections are now conducted every four years on the fourth Monday of October.

 

The next Municipal Election will be held on Monday, October 25, 2010 and the term of office will begin the first Council meeting in December 2010.

 

The Township Clerk serves as the Returning Officer under the Municipal Elections Act and is responsible for the co-ordination and management of the Municipal Election.

COUNCIL STRUCTURE:

 

Currently the Township of Wilmot Council structure consists of a Mayor as the Head of Council and Four Councillors representing a ward system consisting of four wards.  The Mayor is also a Regional Councillor by virtue of Office.

 

This year the Council structure and ward boundaries will change slightly with Council consisting of a Mayor as the Head of Council and five Councillors representing a ward system consisting of four wards; Ward 4 will now have two Councillors.

NOMINATIONS:

 

Nomination Period for the 2010 Municipal Election commences on January 4, 2010 and continues through to Nomination Day, September 10, 2010.

 

The Nomination Form and Declaration of Qualifications must be completed in full and filed in person by the candidate or an agent of the candidate to the Clerk or Deputy Clerk during normal business hours (8:30 am to 4:30 pm) Monday to Friday. The nomination paper may not be faxed or emailed to the Clerk’s office.

 

The last day for filing nominations is September 10, 2010 (Nomination Day) when nominations will be accepted from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  The 2:00 p.m. deadline will be determined by the time on the clock on the wall in the Clerk’s Office.

 

A candidate must be nominated in order to raise or spend money on his/her campaign.

 

The offices for which nominations will be accepted are:

 

Mayor

Ward 1 - 1 Councillor

Ward 2 - 1 Councillor

Ward 3 - 1 Councillor

Ward 4 - 2 Councillors

The nomination filing fee is $200 for the Mayor's position and $100 for all other positions.

 

A candidate must be a qualified elector.
