The Nith River Promenade and Trail in downtown New Hamburg, runs along the banks of the Nith River between Kirkpatrick Park and the Hartman Bridge. This new walkway and trail is an ideal location for visitors to gather for private and community-led events, participate in recreational activities, and see the neighbouring New Hamburg Heritage Water Wheel and Nith River Reservoir Dam.
The purpose of the Nith River Promenade Rehabilitation project is to improve the structure of both, the promenade and the trail, increasing the overall accessibility for users, enhance erosion control, and reduce the negative effects of major flood events.
Concept overview
The concept design includes the following features:
- Upgrading and relocating trail lighting
- Improving the look of the Nith River Promenade and Trail to compliment the adjoining Kirkpatrick Park
- Provide durable light poles able to better withstand the flooding and ice floes from the Nith River during high water and spring thaw events
- Decreasing ramp slopes and removing all steps within the trail to increase accessibility
- Enhancing the upper platform
- Improving usability and views of the New Hamburg Heritage Water Wheel
- Installing improved guardrails
- Replacing the interlock surfacing with concrete
- Widening and resurfacing the Nith River Trail from the Cenotaph to Kirkpatrick Park with asphalt
- Adding armour stone retaining walls
- Creating deep planting beds for future garden beds and tree planting
- Creating a lower gathering area with armour stone seating allowing visitors to rest and relax next to the river’s edge
- Levelling and widening the promenade pathway with concrete to greatly reduce ice damage and eliminate the holes and ruts on the path
- Installing rip rap for improved slope stability, erosion control, and beautification
- Planting wildflower riverbank seed to discourage geese, encourage pollinators and reduce landscape maintenance

Township Feedback
Public engagement and community feedback are an important part of any Township project. Township of Wilmot staff and the project team encourage residents to provide comments and feedback on the proposed Nith River Promenade concept design through our online feedback form. Members of the public will have until May 2, 2022, at 4:30 p.m. to submit feedback. All comments and feedback are appreciated and seriously considered by the project team and consultants as they move forward in the process.
