To meet the need for an accessibility advisory committee under the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, the Township of Wilmot is a member municipality of the Grand River Accessibility Advisory Committee (GRAAC). GRAAC meetings are generally held on the fourth Thursday of each month in the Conestoga Room at the City of Kitchener City Hall, during the declared emergency due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the meetings are held through a virtual environment. The City of Kitchener is currently hosting the virtual meetings, please visit Grand River Accessibility Advisory Committee - Region of Waterloo for the monthly link to watch the meetings. There are no meetings in July and the December meeting is on the third Thursday of the month to avoid conflicts with the holiday season.
The Township receives advice from the Committee on accessibility matters along with the Cities of Kitchener and Waterloo, the Townships of Woolwich, North Dumfries and Wellesley, and the Region of Waterloo.
Recruitment for GRAAC typically opens by Mid-September each year for the term starting January of the following year. The committee consists of a maximum of 15 members. The commitment is a 4 year term; therefore, recruitment is dependent on spaces available. When recruitment opens, the information on how to apply will be posted here.
GRAAC is a cross-disability municipal advisory committee which provides advice to the local municipal councils of the cities of Kitchener and Waterloo, the Region of Waterloo and the townships of Woolwich, Wellesley, Wilmot and North Dumfries. Members are chosen based on experience in the field of disability. Members have a lived experience of disability-issues or are agencies serving persons with disabilities. Members must have a willingness to work within the framework of a municipal advisory committee.
The Grand River Accessibility Advisory Committee assists the participating municipalities fulfill the purpose of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act by providing advice in regards to the removal of barriers (physical, architectural, technological, informational, communicational, attitudinal and policy/practice).
