Sign Permits

The Township's Sign By-law determines where and how signs can be placed in Wilmot. Some signs require a building permit; others, like billboards and signs along Highway 7/8, require additional approvals.

Signs that require a building permit

You must apply for a building permit for the following signs:

  • Billboard signs
  • Canopy signs
  • Fascia/wall mounted signs
  • Ground signs
  • Projecting signs
  • Pylon signs
  • Roof Signs

Contact the Building Division if you are unsure whether a permit is required.

Application Process

Follow the steps below to apply for a permit for your sign.

You must include the following with your permit application:

  • Structural drawings with dimensions
  • Foundation detail (where applicable)
  • Anchorage detail and weight of sign for wall mounted signs
  • Site plan showing location and distances to property lines
  • Engineering details may be required for some wall mounted and pylon signs

If you require more information on what drawings and details are required, please contact the Building Division.

Building permit fees are paid when a building permit is issued. Accepted methods of payment are cash, cheque, or debit. Credit card payment is only accepted for permit fees up to $2750.

For more information, please view our current permit fees.

Complete and save the following forms for your application:

Use our online Building Permit Submission Form to submit the applications you completed in Step 3.

Please ensure you answer all questions and upload all materials requested. Once received, staff will review to consider whether the submission is complete and can be accepted.

Billboard Signs

Prior to receiving a building permit, a Billboard License is required. Billboard signs are licensed annually by the Township of Wilmot and are the only signs permitted to advertise business activities not occurring on the same property that the sign is located. Billboards are subject to an annual license fee.

For more information on billboard sign licenses, please contact the Planning Division and refer to the Township Sign By-law.

Portable Signs

Portable signs do not require a building permit, but do require a portable sign permit. Portable signs are permitted on commercial, industrial, and institutional properties. Two permits may be issued per calendar year per property (regardless of number of businesses on a property).

To obtain a portable sign permit, please apply online using our Portable Sign application and payment form. You will be required to provide the following:

  • Authorization of property owner to apply for permit (unless previously provided to the Township)
  • Address of property where sign is proposed to be installed
  • Name of business and message that will be displayed on the sign
  • Site plan showing location of sign and distances from property lines and other signs (unless the sign is in the same location as previous approvals by the Township). Use of Google Maps or other aerial imagery is acceptable.
  • Date when sign will be installed

View our fee schedule for current fees.

Signs Along Highway 7/8

If you are planning to erect or alter a sign or advertising device on a property within 400m of Highway 7/8, you may require a permit from the Ministry of Transportation prior to issuance of a permit by the Township of Wilmot.

Refer to the Township Sign By-law for further information and regulations on signs.
