Become a Wilmot firefighter

Commit to service. Commit to Wilmot.

Wilmot Fire is a team of trained, dedicated professionals who serve their neighbours with compassion, integrity and pride.

Firefighters respond to fires, medical emergencies, motor vehicle collisions and other calls for assistance, while also supporting training, public education and community events.

Becoming a volunteer firefighter is rewarding and demanding. Emergency calls are unpredictable, and serving safely requires training, effort and commitment.

We are looking for people who:

  • Care about their community
  • Act with integrity and respect
  • Are dependable, calm and compassionate
  • Work well in a team and accept coaching
  • Are committed to learning, training and emergency response
  • Want to serve the department and community long term

Firefighting experience is not required. Character, commitment and a desire to serve matter most.

Wilmot firefighters balance service with work, family and other responsibilities. You will be expected to:

  • Complete recruit training and certification
  • Attend regular department training
  • Respond to emergency calls when available
  • Maintain required knowledge, fitness and skills
  • Follow policies, operating guidelines and safety practices
  • Represent Wilmot Fire professionally

Family support is important, and employer support may help members respond to daytime emergencies. Applicants should consider the commitment carefully before applying.

Serving with Wilmot Fire offers opportunities to:

  • Receive professional training and recognized certifications
  • Build practical, leadership and communication skills
  • Build friendships and a sense of belonging
  • Participate in public education and community events
  • Pursue growth and leadership opportunities
  • Receive a competitive honorarium and applicable insurance coverage
  • Make a meaningful difference for your neighbours

The recruitment process helps identify candidates with the character, aptitude, physical ability and commitment to serve safely and effectively.

The process may include:

  1. Online application
  2. Candidate information session
  3. Written aptitude assessment
  4. Physical aptitude assessment
  5. Interview
  6. Reference and background checks
  7. Medical assessment

Complete requirements, dates and instructions are included in our volunteer firefighter candidate guide book.
