Summer at the Castle: Summer concerts, afternoon tea, ghost walks and history

BADEN, ONT. Castle Kilbride provides something for every taste this summer as the restored Victorian-era mansion continues its popular “Fabled” exhibit. The Castle offerings in July and August include outdoor concerts; tours; afternoon tea; crafts; quiet hour; an art show; and ghost walks.

Built in 1877, the Castle was home to James Livingston, Canada’s “Flax Mill King” and his family. The museum features rare, nationally designated three-dimensional wall and ceiling murals that reflect Victorian extravagance and variety.

The Township purchased Castle Kilbride in 1993 and opened it as a museum for its first time in 1994. In 1995, Castle Kilbride was designated as a National Heritage Site by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada.

The museum’s special exhibit for 2024, “Fabled,” was co-curated by Castle Kilbride and Stratford Festival Archives, pairing the childhood books of Laura Louise Livingston with exquisite costumes previously used on stage.

Here’s a snapshot of what’s happening at Castle Kilbride.

I’ve had the chance to speak with folks who are visiting the Castle from all over Ontario and know that Township residents have especially been enjoying the weekly outdoor concerts. “Staff planned for the Fabled exhibit to be a fun one but the reception it has received has made it magical. It has been exciting for staff to plan and host events to match the theme. Imagination and fun abound this summer.”
