Wilmot Council Takes Significant Step to Support Nithview Long Term Care Home Rebuild and Expansion

BADEN, ON – September 23, 2024 – In a pivotal decision at tonight's Council meeting, Wilmot Council demonstrated its commitment to enhancing access to long-term care in Wilmot Township by approving a grant to Tri-County Mennonite Homes (TCMH) for the Nithview Long-Term Care Home rebuild and expansion project.
"Ontario's long-term care sector is grappling with serious challenges, particularly financial pressures that jeopardize the sustainability of facilities," stated Mayor Natasha Salonen. "Recognizing the urgent need for support from all levels of government, our Council has taken this crucial step to support Nithview’s rebuild and expansion project. The grant we are providing to TCMH, equivalent to their annual Township Development Charge payments for the Nithview project, is a concrete way for our municipality to support the construction of 97 retrofitted and 63 new long-term care beds in Wilmot Township."

Dr. Steven Harrison, Chief Executive Officer of Tri-County Mennonite Homes, said, “I'm grateful that Wilmot Council has approved grant funding which will cover the Township Development Charge payments for the Nithview Long-Term Care home expansion and redevelopment project. This decision isn’t just financial relief; it is a vital endorsement of our shared commitment to ensuring that our elders receive the quality care they deserve, in the community that they love.  In the face of significant pressures within Ontario’s long-term care sector—especially in rural communities—the need for modern facilities and adequate support has never been more urgent. Your partnership is an investment in employment opportunities, core infrastructure, and services for older adults as we work to expand long-term care capacity in Wilmot Township.”

The planned new facility at Nithview will consist of 160 long-term care beds, enabling the redevelopment of the existing home, which has reached the end of its life cycle. This initiative is expected to create over 100 new jobs, significantly benefiting the local economy.

As part of the grant agreement, the Council will include funding in future budgets to cover the required Township Development Charge payments, ensuring that TCMH can move forward with obtaining necessary permits and securing funding.

Mayor Salonen concluded, "Our commitment today reflects the values of our community. We understand the critical role that Nithview plays in supporting our senior population, allowing residents to age in place and receive care within their own community."
