About Heritage Wilmot

The purpose of the Heritage Wilmot and Castle Kilbride Advisory Committee (also known as Heritage Wilmot) is to advise Council on matters relating to the designation and conservation of properties of cultural and heritage value as outlined by the Ontario Heritage Act.

The committee also promotes heritage interests and assists with the recognition of the historical continuity within the community. Formed in the mid-1980’s as Wilmot L.A.C.A.C (Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee) it has worked diligently for the past 40 years to preserve and promote the heritage of Wilmot.


Heritage Wilmot’s Accomplishments

  • To date has designated over twenty-two (22) properties in Wilmot under Part VI of the Ontario Heritage Act.
  • Designated a Heritage Conservation District in New Hamburg’s Downtown Core.
  • Researched significant properties throughout Wilmot Township to create a list of significant properties.
  • Hosted Heritage Days and participated in other community outreach initiatives. 
  • Established a catalogue and inventory of local, historical photographs.
  • Complied and published the book "Photographic Memories." 
  • Created and installed interpretative heritage plaques.
  • Created walking tours for three communities in Wilmot.
  • Created and installed signage to recognize pioneer settlement areas and pioneer cemeteries in Wilmot.
