Commissioner of Oaths

Certain employees at the Township of Wilmot Administration Complex are Commissioners of Oaths. A Commissioner of Oaths is not a Notary Public and cannot notarize your documents.

Requirements

Keep the following in mind when preparing to have a Commissioner sign your document:

  • The person making the oath, often called the declarant, must be present.
  • The declarant must have valid government issued photo identification.
  • No document will be signed without the declarant present.
  • The document must not be signed by the declarant until they are in front of the Commissioner.

Fees

There is a $20 charge for Commissioner of Oaths services which covers up to three commissionings.

Travel Letters

A Commissioner can also sign a travel letter. A travel letter is recommended by the Canadian Border Services Agency when a minor is travelling with only one parent or with any person other than both parents.

The parent or parents not travelling with the child can fill out a form at the Township Administration Complex. That form is used to prepare the travel letter which must be signed by the parent or parents not travelling with the child(ren) in front of a Commissioner.

The process will take time to complete, the same rules and requirements as above apply and the fee is $31. Please allow sufficient time and call ahead to ensure a Commissioner will be available. If you have not planned ahead for this, you may not be able to obtain the travel letter and you may compromise your ability to travel across international borders.

Accommodations may be made when parents cannot attend the office at the same time. Under no circumstances will a travel letter be signed by a Commissioner without the appropriate parent(s) present or without valid government issued photo identification.

Please contact the Legislative Services Division if you are unsure if your document can be signed by a Commissioner.
