Marriage Licence

Township staff can help you obtain a marriage licence or arrange a wedding ceremony at a municipal facility.


Marriage Licence Process

You must be at least 18 years of age to marry. If you are 16 or 17 years old, you must get approval from your parents or guardian. Contact our office for the needed form.

Required Forms

Both people wishing to get married must fill out and sign the Marriage Licence Application Form to get an Ontario Marriage Licence.

In order to proceed with the online marriage application, you will require the latest version of the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Click to download the latest Acrobat plugin.

Parental Information

Please include the last (maiden name if applicable), first and middle names or single name of the applicant's parents. Please only enter information for parents listed on the applicant's birth registration, adoption order, other court order, civil registry, etc.

Submission Process

All paperwork must be submitted prior to an appointment. Submit paperwork one of the following ways:

  • In-person at the Township Administration Complex
  • At the Township Administration Complex outdoor drop-box
  • By email

Marriage licenses are issued by appointment only. Email or call 519-634-8519 x 9221 to book. 

If you do not understand or read English, you will need to bring an interpreter to your appointment. The interpreter will need to provide identification.

Two pieces of identification are needed for both people wishing to get married and must be original pieces, not photocopies. Identification must be in English or French or be translated by a certified translator. At least one piece of identification per person needs to have a current photo.

If only one person is able to come to the office, please bring the proper identification and documents for the other person as well. Please call first to ensure we are available to help you.

Any two of the following pieces of identification are accepted. One must have a photo, and one must have an address.

  • Original Birth Certificate
  • Current Passport
  • Canadian citizenship
  • Current Driver's Licence
  • Record of Landing
  • Permanent Residency Card

The fee for a marriage license is $145, payable by cash or debit only.

Expiry Date

An Ontario Marriage Licence is valid anywhere in Ontario for three (3) months from the date it was issued. There is no waiting period in Ontario to be married once the licence is issued.

The Township of Wilmot can perform your wedding ceremony in the Council Chambers or at Castle Kilbride


Canadian Divorce

The original or court certified copy (no photocopies) of the Decree absolute or Certificate of Divorce must be shown to the licence issuer. A Judgment issued by the Court is not proof of divorce. If you do not have a copy of your Certificate of Divorce, contact the Court House that issued your divorce for a copy, the length of time it takes to obtain a copy can vary.

If you were divorced outside of Canada, please contact Legislative Services for more information.
