Marriage Licence

Township staff can help you obtain a marriage licence or arrange a wedding ceremony at the Township Adminstration Complex.

Marriage Licence Process

Marriage licences can be issued up to 3 months before your ceremony date. We recommend that you apply at least 4 weeks before the ceremony to avoid delays.

You must be at least 18 years of age to marry. If you are 16 or 17 years old, you must get approval from your parents or guardian. Contact our office for the needed form.

You will need the following documents to apply for a marriage licence.

Valid Identification

Both applicants must provide two pieces of valid ID.

  • At least one piece must have a photo
  • At least one piece must show the applicant's current address
  • ID must be in English or French or be officially translated by a certified translator

Accepted forms of ID include:

  • Original Birth Certificate
  • Current Passport
  • Canadian Citizenship
  • Current Driver’s Licence
  • Records of Landing
  • Permanent Residency Card

Proof of Divorce

If you’ve been married previously, you must provide proof of divorce.

  • An original or court-certified copy of the Decree Absolute or Certificate of Divorce is required.
  • The hard copy must be produced when collecting the marriage licence.
  • A court judgement is not sufficient.

If you were divorced outside of Canada, additional documentation is required. Please contact the Office of the Registrar General for more information regarding the documents needed to be submitted (1-800-461-2156).

Once you have gathered the necessary documents, you can complete and submit the online marriage application form

If you are unable to use the online form, contact Legislative Services to coordinate an alternative submission process.

Township staff will review your application within 2 to 5 business days after submission. Staff will contact you to confirm if your application is complete or if corrections are needed.

Once the marriage licence application has been approved, you must make an appointment with Township staff to confirm all details and collect the licence. You will also be required to sign an oath verifying the information on the licence.

At least one of the applicants must attend the appointment, which will be held at the Township Administration Complex (60 Snyder's Road West, Baden).
