Trails

Wilmot has 11 trail locations and almost 58 kilometers of existing trails for you to enjoy. 


Trail Locations

In addition to the trails listed below, Wilmot is also home to 24 km portion of the Avon Trail, a linear hiking trail running from St. Marys to Conestogo. Visit the Avon Trail website for more information.

Baden Hills Trail

2733 Sandhills Road, Baden

Baden Hills Trail include 1 km of accessible trails looping through fields and forest and close to 2 km of moderate to difficult hiking trails leading to the summit of one of Baden’s hills.

The hiking trails include steep climbs and narrow footing. They are not designed for use by strollers, bicycles or for those that require accessible access.

This project is a partnership between the Township of Wilmot and the Region of Waterloo. The accessible trail and parking facility were made possible through the generous donation of Schout Corporation.

Beckdale Trails

Snyder's Road West, Baden

On lands generously donated to the Township of Wilmot by the Schmidt Estate, as well as Stremma Developments, this 2.0 km stone dust multi-use trail links Waterloo-Oxford DSS, Sir Adam Beck PS, and Brenneman Drive to Nafziger Road approximately 300m north of the Schmidt Woods trails.

The trails are named in recognition of the farm on which the trails were built.

Construction of the trail was completed by, and entirely funded through the generosity of, Schout Corporation.

Schmidt Woods Trails

1291 Nafziger Road, Baden

These trails consist of approximately 3.0 km of compacted stone dust multi-purpose trail (designed to meet accessibility standards), and approximately 1 km of natural ground hiking within the municipal forest surrounding the Wilmot Recreation Complex.

The trail extends from the northwest corner of the WRC at the Nafziger Road entrance to the east end of the property, with a connection to the paved bike lanes on Gingerich Road.

The lands for these trails were generously donated to the Township of Wilmot by the benefactors of the Schmidt Estate as a legacy to the memory of Harold and Enid Schmidt's contributions to Baden and Wilmot Township. Construction of the Schmidt Trails was completed in part with funding received through the CIP 150 program.

Christner Trail

Hostetler Road to Christner Road, New Hamburg

The Christner Trail extends between Hostetler Road and Christner Road in New Hamburg. The trail is a stone dust path winding through an old tree line and farm lane. The trail is presently 0.5km in one direction.


Laschinger Woods

Laschinger Boulevard and Ingold Avenue, New Hamburg

Laschinger Woods currently consist of a 1.1km long accessible stone dust trail winding through the woodlot on the south side of Laschinger Boulevard in New Hamburg. Enjoy the trail on its own or along with the trail and boardwalk connections between Laschinger Boulevard and Forest Glen Public School.


Mike Schout Wetlands Preserve

 28 Smith's Creek Drive, New Hamburg

The Mike Schout Wetlands Preserve is a 55 acre naturalization and wetlands restoration project that features a raised boardwalk, pollinator meadows, heron, eagle and osprey nests, and educational components.

Morningside Trail

Bergey Court, New Hamburg

Morningside Trail extends from the end of Bergey Court to the property boundary of the Morningside retirement village.

The trail consists of a concrete sidewalk from Bergey Court to the Highway 7/8 bridge, where it bends south and turns to a wide natural ground cover trail the remainder of the way to Morningside. Travelling in one direction, this component of the trail is approximately 1.2km.

The trail also extends to the north under the Highway 7/8 bridge to connect to the Riverside Drive to Jacob Street pedestrian bridge and walkway.


Nith River Promenade

Located at the rear parking lot boundary of 121 Huron Street, New Hamburg

The promenade and trail provide access to stunning views of three New Hamburg landmarks: the New Hamburg Reservoir Dam, the New Hamburg Waterwheel and the Hartman Bridge to people of all levels of ability. 


Walker Woods

89 Bonaventure Drive, New Hamburg

Located in New Hamburg, Walker Woods offers over 2km of hiking trails.

The trail head can be accessed by a sidewalk and stone dust trail starting at Highway 7/8 and running along the west side of Haysville Road.

Alternatively parking is available at 89 Bonaventure Drive with a stone dust trail leading to the trail head.

Petersburg Crown Lands

Queen Street, Petersburg

The Petersburg Crown Lands are a popular hiking and cross-country skiing venue.

Located south of Highway 7/8 on the east side of Queen Street, this forest is administered by the Ministry of Natural Resources. The woodlot contains over 4km of multi-use trail as well as additional informal trails.

The MNR lands extend approximately halfway to Trussler Road from Queen Street. There is an informal trail that follows the Highway 7/8 road allowance terminating at the easterly off ramp of Highway 7/8 and Trussler Road.


Petersburg Regional Forest

1974 Snyder's Road East, Petersburg

The Petersburg Regional Forest is a popular area for mountain biking and hiking located east of Petersburg on the north side of Snyder’s Road East.

Access is gained by way of a right-of-way at 1974 Snyder’s Road East. A parking lot has been created for trail users at the entrance to the woodlot.

The woodlot contains approximately 30 km of single track trails and multi-use trails referred to as The Hydrocut Trails. Trails are maintained by the Waterloo Cycling Club through an agreement with the Region of Waterloo.

Trails Master Plan

The Wilmot Trails Master Plan guides the development of trails in our community. The purpose of the Wilmot Trails Master Plan (WTMP) is to establish the goals and objectives as well as the short, medium and long term plans for trail development in the Township of Wilmot.
