Brownfield Financial Incentive Program
The Township of Wilmot works with the Region of Waterloo to support the cleanup of eligible brownfield properties through a Joint Tax Increment Grant Program.
Program details
This program helps property owners recover some of the cost of cleaning up eligible brownfield sites in Wilmot. The aim is to return underutilized brownfield properties back into productive use by reducing the cost of remediation.
Benefits of the program include:
- Environmental remediation
- Revitalization of vacant or underutilized properties
- More efficient use of existing infrastructure and services
- Support for sustainable growth and development
- Increased economic activity and investment
- A stronger local tax base
Grant amount
The total grant paid to the property owner is based on eligible remediation costs. Payments are made after the property has been remediated, redeveloped, and reassessed.
Annual payments are made to successful applicants for up to 10 years and are calculated based on the increase in municipal taxes resulting from redevelopment.
Eligibility and application process
Step 1: Pre-consultation meeting
If the property is deemed an eligible brownfield site, submit an application for the TIG program. Applications must be submitted before the first building permit is issued.
Approved grants are paid through annual tax increment payments following remediation, redevelopment, and reassessment of the property,
Program duration
The program will be re-evaluated in 2031. It may be amended or discontinued at the discretion of Regional or Township Council at any time.
If you are considering applying, please contact the Regional Brownfields Coordinator to discuss your property and project.
