Telecommunication Towers

Telecommunication towers are required to address the increasing demands for wireless communication service in the Township of Wilmot.

Regulation

Telecommunication towers and antenna systems are regulated by the Government of Canada through Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED). While the Township participates in the review and consultation process, the authority to approve or deny telecommunication towers proposals rests with the ISED.

Review process

A pre-submission consultation is required to begin the review process for a new telecommunication tower. Use our online form to request a consultation.

Once your proposal is formally submitted and all fees are paid, the submission will be circulated to relevant municipal departments and external agencies for comment.

Review fees are collected in accordance with the Township’s Fees and Charges By-law for a Site Plan Application.

You must draft and circulate a notice about the proposed telecommunication tower to:

  • Property owners within a radius that is three times the height of the tower
  • All abutting property owners, even if their property falls outside this radius
  • The Township Ward Councillor

This notice must be shared with the Township for review before it is circulated.

You are responsible for collecting any responses to the notice and addressing any questions or concerns expressed by the recipients. This information must also be shared with the Township.

If all comments received through the public consultation process have been addressed, Township staff will provide you with a letter of concurrence.

You must submit your letter of concurrence to the ISED, which makes the final decision on tower proposals.
